Nepal, the Most Beautiful Country in the World

Nepal has seen many rulers and ruling dynasties. The earliest rulers were the Kirantis who ruled from 9th century B.C. to 1st century A.D. Legends and chronicles mention that the Indian Emperor Ashoka had come to Nepal and visited Lumbini, the place where the Buddha was born, and where he erected a huge stone pillar to commemorate his visit to that spot.

 

The Kirants were replaced by Licchavis who, according to the earliest evidences in inscriptions of the 5th century A.D. found in the courtyard of Changunarayan temple which is about 15 km north east of Kathmandu, ruled this country from 1st century to 9th century A.D. This period is noted for the many temples and fine sculptures built around the Kathmandu valley.

 

The Licchavis were followed by the Thakuris, then came the Malla dynasty. The Mallas ruled focusing mainly on the Kathmandu Valley which has been the residence for most Nepali rulers from time immemorial. No other part of Nepal is as rich in cultural heritage as Kathmandu. Thanks to the exceptionally talented crafts-men, who dedicated themselves to construct the many temples and statues, we have seven world heritage sites in the Kathmandu Valley itself.

 

In the 14th century A.D. King Jayasthiti Malla established a rigid social order. His grandson tried in every way to protect his country from suspected enemy states. Unfortunately, all his efforts were fruitless, everything went beyond his control and the country eventually divided up into 50 small feudal states including the three major ones in the valley.

 

Then came the Shah dynasty. King Prithvi Narayan Shah who annexed small principalities including three states in the Kathmandy Valley and unified Nepal in a single kingdom. Recognizing the threat of the British Raj in India, he dismissed European missionaries from the country and for more than a century, Nepal remained in isolation. During the mid-19th century Jung Bahadur Rana became Nepal's first prime minister to wield absolute power. The Ranas were overthrown in a democracy movement of the early 1950s.

 

Nepal was declared a Federal Democratic Republic state on May 28, 2008, during the first meeting of the Constituent Assembly. It was previously a multiparty democracy since 1990.

 

Siddhartha Gautam, the prince was born in the Kingdom in Nepal who later found the enlightenment in India and came to be known as Gautam Buddha. Beautiful Buddhist monasteries and stupas over the relics have become an inseparable part of Nepalese & Indian art, culture and architecture. Nalanda was once a world center for Buddhism and its philosophy until it disappeared suddenly in 13th century except for the small kingdoms in the hilly tracts. Early 20th century saw re-emergence of Buddhism and even today some of the famous pilgrimage sites in India & Nepal related to Buddhism attract large number of devotees and visitors every year. Most of them are situated around the River Ganges. The significant sites to be visited as great Buddhist centres are Lumbini, Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Shravasti, Kushinara Sankashaya, Nalanda, Rajgir, Sanchi stupa and other cave temples as in Ajanta and Ellora.

 

Draped along the greatest heights of the Himalaya, Nepal is where the ice-cold of the mountains meets the steamy heat of the Indian plains. It's a land of yaks and yetis, stupas and Sherpas and some of the best trekking on earth. The Himalaya's most sophisticated urban cultures took shape here, in the three great minikingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley - Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur - home to a world-class artistic and architectural heritage.

 

Behind the Vishnu shrine of Ichangu Narayan, northwest of Swayambhunath in the Kathmandu Valley, rises the 'Abode of Snows' (Himalaya in Sanskrit), a magnet for trekkers and mountaineers the world over. Only in Nepal can you trek for weeks without the need even for a tent. No longer does your name have to be Tenzing or Hillary to set foot in Everest Base Camp. Out of the mountains, get your adrenaline kick from world-class white-water rafting, kayaking and mountain biking, or from the spine-tingling sight of your first tiger or rhino in Royal Chitwan National Park.

How to adjust hydraulic disk brakes?

I need to adjust the Shimano XTR brm965-f hydraulic brakes on my bike because i just changed by wheel and it is now rubbing against the disk. How do I do this?

Hydraulic systems have very close tolerances between pads and rotor. Alignment of the caliper to the rotor is critical to the performance of the brake. The procedure for Shiman® Hydraulic XTR, XT, Deore, Saint caliper alignment using an adaptor bracket is as follows:

1.For bracket mounted calipers, fully loosen caliper mounting bolts. This will allow the caliper to move sideways.

2.Depress the brake lever to secure pads against the rotor and maintain pressure. This will move caliper so pads are aligned to rotor.

3.Inspect caliper and brake pad pistons. Push caliper left or right until pistons appear centered over rotor.

4.Maintain pressure on the rotor and tighten the caliper mounting bolts.

5.Release lever and inspect this initial pad alignment. Ideally, the pads should clear the rotor with no rubbing. In some cases, however, a light rubbing may occur and will not generally be an issue with performance. If the wheel seems to slow when it is turned, re-adjust the pads by loosening the caliper mounting bolts to reposition the caliper.

6.Fine-tune the pad alignment by fully loosening one mounting bolt while keeping the other bolt snug. This will allow you to push the caliper while pivoting off the snug bolt.
If the brake caliper is bolted directly to the mounts, it is necessary to use thin washers and shims to adjust the caliper. A washer with a post, called a "banjo washer" can be placed between the frame or fork mount and the caliper body.

Install washers and secure mounting bolt. View pad to rotor alignment, then add or subtract washers as necessary.

Which mountain bike is a better buy...?

I am looking to purchase my first mountain bike. I am 6 feet tall and 200lbs. I have been looking at a 2008 Raleigh Mojave 2.0 for 249.99 and a 2008 Trek 820 for 259.99. I plan to do road and light trail riding, but mostly road. I am wondering which is the better buy.
I must also state that I am takig up riding in order to rehab my legs. I used to run 20+ miles, but can't do that now.

Both of those bikes are built in the same factory... Ideal Bike Company in Taiwan. There is no difference in the "quality" of the frames.

However, the Raleigh has a better fork. The difference between the SRAM and Shimano components is negligible.

For 10 bucks, I would get the Raleigh and a couple of waterbottle cages.
