my list is pretty long though,
brand preferences: gary fisher, jamis, trek, scott
price range : 350 - 450 us dollar
so far i have trek 3500 or scott aspect60,
i do prefer disk break system
forget the disc brakes and go for the trek or fisher,if you must have disc brakes plan on spending more money and upgrade to at least a 3900 or better not sure what fisher bike is comparable.i have a trek 3900 without the disc brakes and it has been and is a great bike although i have upgraded quite a few parts on it,forks derailer,cranks and wheels ,my gary fisher tassajara i haven't had to do anything to other than try to ride the wheels off of it

Once you have the crank arms off there are essentially 4 different types of bottom brackets, 3 which have a particular tool and 1 that may be removed with common tools. Which ones you have depends on the model and year of the crank which you didn't provide:
The external bottom bracket generally fall into 2 categories- Campagnolo and non-Campagnolo. These are basically a set of bearings screwed into the frame using a large splined wrench that fits around the bearing. Turn the correct way to remove. Campagnolo and non-Campagnolo tools generally are not compatible with each other;
The BB30 bottom bracket along with the spin-offs from the design are bearings press fitted into the frame. They are relatively easy to remove using a variety of tools, but fair warning, most manufacturers tell you that the bearings are destroyed on removal and will require replacement;
Modern sealed cartridge internal bottom brackets also fall into the Campagnolo/non-Campagnolo nightmare and use a splined socket to remove;
Older internal bottom brackets usually require a big adjustable wrench and a lockring spanner (or judicious use of a screwdriver and hammer) to remove the cups. These can be VERY stubborn and usually should not be attempted at home.
Oh yeah, there is one other type- the one piece or American style. All you need to remove these is an adjustable wrench and a screwdriver to back out the bearing cone. Don't forget to remove the pedals first.
