Thinking to change tires on your bike
Do you lie awake nights, dreaming of the day you can finally replace your bicycle tire? Probably not.
In terms of exciting things to do, replacing your bicycle tire rates right there with watching I Love Lucy re-runs. But I must admit, it's a bit more fun than being strapped to a hospital bed because you blew out your old bike tire right in the middle of rush hour.
How will you know when it's time to buy a new tire? If you've worn through the tread of a tire, exposing the threads of the casing below it, it's definitely time to get a new tire. You shouldn't wait until it gets to this condition before you replace it.
If you have a sudden onslaught of flat tires, it most likely means the tire tread has worn so thin it can no longer protect the tube from pointed objects you happen to run over, in which case you should get a new tire.
Back tires will start to square off (flatten), when they start getting worn out. Squaring off slows a tire down, and it's an indication you'll need to get a new tire soon.
If you take a look at your tire when you first get it, you'll see how deep the grooves are. When these grooves start to disappear, it's time to change the tire.
A front tire usually will wear out after about 2000-4000 miles, depending upon the kind of bike riding you do and the quality and thickness of the tire. For a back tire, that figure is more like 1500-3000 miles.
But if you store your bicycle for a long time without riding it, your tires can still go bad. Check to see whether the tire treads have hardened and cracked with age. Even worse, the side of the tire-called the casing-might split, rot or delaminate. If you find cracks, rot or frayed casing threads, the tire will in all probability blow out once you begin riding on it.
Sometimes, you just might want to get rid of a tire that hasn't performed the way you'd like it to.
If your tires are too slow and heavy, for example, you might like to change to lighter tires to gain speed. Or maybe you'll want to change to sew-up racing tires so you can pass your friends by.
To replace a tire, you'll first have to find the tire's size from the side of your tire. Some of the more standard American sizes include: 26 x 2.0, 26 x 1.5 and 27 x 1.25. The first number (usually 26 or 27) is the diameter of the tire in inches, and the otherfigure is the width. You can't replace your tire with one that has a different diameter size, but you can change the size of the width, though your tire rim might be limited
The first consideration when buying a new tire should be the type of beads you want; beads hold the tire to the rim.
Wire beads are made of steel, while flexible (folding) beads are made of various man-made materials.|The two broad varieties of beads are folding beads, which are made of various synthetic materials, and wire beads, which are made of steel. Wire-beaded tires are heavier but less expensive than folding tires.|Folding tires are lighter and pricier than wire-beaded tires.
The tire's casing fabric is rated in threads per inch (TPI), and the higher the number, the better your handling will be.
If you tend to have a lot of flats, you might want to get a tire with a sub-tread, which is a reinforcing sub-layer of material that helps guard against punctures, but also adds weight.
Your bike dealer can give you more information about the many kinds and brands of tires you can get.Inner tubes, Cycle Carriers, Cycle Tyres
